Abstract

The Middle Included is a systematic exploration of the meanings of logos throughout Aristotle’s work. It claims that the basic meaning is “gathering,â€? a relation that holds its terms together without isolating them or collapsing one to the other. This meaning also applies to logos in the sense of human language. Aristotle describes how some animals are capable of understanding non-firsthand experience without being able to relay it, while others relay it without understanding. Aygün argues that what distinguishes human language, for Aristotle, is its ability to both understand and relay firsthand and non-firsthand experiences. This ability is key to understanding the human condition: science, history, news media, propaganda, gossip, utopian fiction, and sophistry, as well as philosophy. Ã-mer Aygün finds Aristotle’s name for this peculiar but crucial human ability of “gatheringâ€? both experiences is logos, and this leads to a claim about the specificity of human rationality and language.

Abstract

Rabinoff strives to account for ethical perception (aisthesis) in Aristotle's ethicsâ€"to give it a place of importance in ethical choice and actionâ€"and to offer an account of the faculty of perception expansive enough to include reception of the ethical significance of particulars. The book is motivated by particular features of Aristotle's thought and by increasing philosophical awareness that the ethical agent is an embodied, situated individual, rather than a disembodied, abstract rational will. Traditionally, the soul has been understood to have a non-rational part characterized by desire and perception and a rational part characterized by thinking, knowledge, and argument. Depending on how the relationship between the sides is conceived, the non-rational is either a bane to be controlled by the rational, or plays an irreducible role in moral action. By establishing and accounting for perception's place in ethics, Rabinoff shows the importance for ethical life of integrating both.

Abstract

Between 1592 and 1606, four jesuit professors from the College of Coimbra published a course of Aristotelian Philosophy, known by the title Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Societatis Jesu. Given its intrinsic value, he eventually knew a global influence: from the Atlantic to the Urals, the Far East and Latin America. Also some eminent philosophers (e.g. Descartes or Peirce) were readers of the work of Coimbra but, due to the numerous editions that the work met abroad, its overwhelming presence in the european university libraries, has determined the study of philosophy by thousands of students. Written in an accessible language, this monograph aims to give an updated, systematic and rigorous perspective of the main themes addressed in the work Coimbra - logic, physics, psychology, ethics and metaphysics - for the first time presented as «an exposition of philosophical science in a systematic, deductive and disputational form».

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Unified by the theoretical and hermeneutical arch that links physics to metaphysics, the three subjects here analysed, belonging to the famous Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Socíetatis lesu (1592-1606) - colour, nature and knowledge - strike the reader by their modernity. The first, reveals Coimbra productivity, regarding Manuel de Góis’ theory of colours, so similar to Goethe’s; the second, underlines ali the aesthetical possibilities the Coimbra Commentaries may confer to some theoretical domains as anthropology, cosmology or even science; lastly, after studying a theological theme that pertains to the doctrine of the knowledge, “separation”, to the reader is proposed a surprisingly interpretation: the Cartesian tone ofthis precise theme.
